Call Centres are production lines instead of a convey belt of work, you have a computer screen that keep putting jobs in front of you.
As well as the reasons Joe has stated, the reasons Call Centres have popped up all over the NE is because we have a few important NEW LABOUR MPS.

All docks haven't closed, Swans has a really big contract coming up & the yard is complaining about the LACK OF LOCAL SKILLED PEOPLE!!!!!
LEAVE THE CENTRES NOW & GET TRAINED UP!!!!!!

My time has passed but I wish I had of trained to be lecky. These people are making MEGA WONGA @ the mo

I was meaning leckys/electrician are making MEGA WONGA at the mo.

Call Centres are not good but you need places where low skilled workforces can be employed

oops this is helz by the way

yaaay im glad to find out that india has a good economy.....that must mean that the disgraceful poverty i saw when living there since january must be gone now then? no children will be killed and dumped on rubbish dumps and eaten by pigs cause they can't afford to keep them? and not forgetting the kids who have their arms and legs hacked off so they can make more money begging

    yeah thats a great economy

im sure theres a few rich people in ethiopia too

and with regards to call centres....close them down??? bomb them i say.....I HATE CALL CENTRES 95% full of stupid people who are too busy picking their nose to be arsed about what your wanting them to do

every time i ring a call centre i ring my anger management tutor straight after

Its a smoke screen, the current politcal structures keep India's masses locked in massive poverty... The representitives get very rich (just like the days of good old british rule) but the masses are still an undeveloped illiterate third world country... The correct steps are finally beginning to be taken... however india still suffers from unimaginable poverty.

With the way it grows I think we'll be able to comapre it to brazil, where rio has massive wealth but unbelievable poverty... the rich get richer, the poor get poorer... its the way capitalism works in third world countries.

Although India have the technology to do this, it doesn't have the economy or the public backing to support it. China (largely tipped to be the world's next/newest superpower) have only just managed to put a man into space, and that's after decades of trial/error/failure. China has done it mainly out of vanity, to show the west that they can. India doesn't have such an axe to grind with the west, so the nation doesn't much support the space programme, which suits the government because they can't afford to give the country a space programme worth writing about. The economy's so tightly stretched by the nuke programme, who's sole aim is 'keeping up appearances' with Pakistan.

Back to the point though. You're all mixing business with ethics. Why shouldn't companies outsource their labour to cheaper employment markets? British people bang on about this as if it's some kind of birth rite. You're asking business to stagnate and not progress.

I dont have a problem with out Indian friends having Nukes as they will more than likely be fireing them at countries that I dont like.

But nicking OUR call centre jobs!!!!!

As most call centres were setup with central governement £££'s & local governement saying 'Build on that green belt as long you employ' I do think I have some right.

These companies will stagnate as there will be less bucks in UK.

The worst thing about Transco, National Rail, BT re-routeing the work is that they were all NATIONAL INDUSTRIES ONCE!!!!!!!!

sorry I was playing Devil's advocate there and being tongue in cheek at the same time.... not easy to pull off on here :spangled:

It's got fuck all to do with ethics anyway... this is global capitalism (aka globalisation) at work so the only considerations are the bottom line, operating costs and profits...... ethical considerations don't get a look in

    Ain't capitalism great :D

I'd disagree and say this is globalisation at its best, we're not actually exploiting here... this is far more admirable than phillipene sweat shops...

Capitalism for the short term isn;t going anywhere, so I'd much rather see iniatives like this where we're moving half decent jobs else where than just dirt cheap manufacturing jobs.

I agree with you.... this is capitalism at its unfettered best, a true world-wide market economy alongside a true world-wide labour force.

I'm trying to explain to the "british jobs for british people" brigade why our mega-corps are more concerned with things like unit-costs than keeping jobs in this country. They just don't do nationalism :D

I agree with both sides of the argument here. I hate ringing my bank and getting through to someone that doesnt have a fucking clue what Im talking about. HSBC have done it and Eagle Star have. When I was working at Eagle Star they were making people redudant cos they apparently couldnt afford to keep them but they then set up a whole new centre over in India from scratch and even sent staff from here over to sort it all out and gave them all pay rises for doing it!

On the other hand, call centre jobs are shit and taking them away will give people more motivation to get qualifications to get a good job. Factories have better working conditions that call centres and they treat their staff better too. Ive done both and know which Id rather go back to if push came to shove. Id rather die than work in another call centre!

Manufacturing being moved does my head in too cos the company I work for is losing customers at an alarming rate cos theres not much goods to shift from here anymore. I speak to about 2 or 3 companies a week that are closing down and moving to other countries
