I think people are taking things a bit seriously today...

my mother, father, all grandparents, 2 uncles (from 4), 1 aunty (from 2) & 2 best mates have all died - they were close to me - and i didn't take that much offence to his comment.

Maybe the grief is still too recent for some, but as the cliché says, it gets better with time.

my loses have made me much more cold i'm afraid to say.

As he neither knew how recently anything had happened, nor how Bella has taken it herself, his comment was completely thoughtless, and was then massively compounded by his second comment.

Helen/bob/claire/bella/whoever: I'm sorry your grandparent(s) have died. Perhaps the second comment was a bit insensitive, but the first was more a play on words than a joke about anyone in particular dieing.

And, not to make it sound like a competition or anything, I've lost 3 out of 4 grandparents so far.
