the simple answer is yes. the police & laws of cuba are extremely tough even on what we consider to be minor crimes. with penalties ranging upto 70yrs imprisonment. i think cuba is an example where punishment actually does manage to work as a deterrant to crime. criminals fear capture & prosecution and it works, the knock on effect to the next generation of cubans can also be seen with many of those who would of grown upto be criminals in a less strict society instead find themselves leading law-abiding lives.

i certainly would be happy to live with much more severe punishments if it meant as a society that people feared to commit crimes, rather than lived in fear that they may be the victim of a crime. this is on very simplistic terms but i don't see how a society that has so little crime can be inferior to ours.

    agreed!!!

not to sound harsh/nasty but people in this country and this government spend too much time thinking about helping out other coutries...

    HELP OUT YOUR OWN FIRST!!!

why when even the majority of those who are considered to have difficult & poor lifestyles in this country still have infinitely better lifestyles than millions in africa?

just because we share the same nationality as those who are poor in our soceity should not give them the right to be helped above those in far worse situations around the world.

I'd agree, but we have a better standard of iving than those exploited - why should our dole rats get a £5 rise when children die of malnutrition every day... I'd value someones life over a £5 dole rise.

because no matter what - you should look after your own first!

even our poorest folk may have better lifestyles than those in ppl in africa - granted, doesnt mean our people should have to have worse lifestayles than say me and you?

Not meaning to be harsh - its just how i feel!

    Sorry I strongly disagree.

It is our exploitation of the third world that causes such problems, why shouldn't we look out for them... I was taught if you cause a problem you do everything you can to fix it.

By your logic if we were all millionaires but a the poor only had a £60k wage packet, then we'd be better off lining the £60k's pockets than preventing starvation in say etheopia.

    Bri u do sound harsh.

at the end of the day we are all still human, and i fail to see how the country you are born in should determine who recieves aid. surely it should be on a scale in which those most in need recieve first and foremost, not those who happen to of been born in the right country?

looking at it from that point of view - yes. we are wrong in exploting them.

you are actually right - we pay them 2p/day to make nike trainers etc....which fat cats make ££££ out of...

hmm - i will stand down on this one PARTLY - i do however think that you should help your own country first the in MOST cases.

i will say that there are some cases when other countried need help more....

not harsh at all joe - maybe just wrongly wordes/put across :)

maybe if this was the case EVERYWHERE - the problem is tho - ppl exploit britain - a lot of other "rich" countries sit back and watch us be the nice guys to help every1.....when they themselves cud do a lot more...

if every1 puts in their fare share (who can afford to) then we wudnt have to give as much and cud therefore look after our own ppl more.

because they know we are gonna help!

why do you think so many immigrants for example come here?

cos we dont like to say no at risk of upsetting sum1.

(nb: nothing against genuine immigrants before any1 starts)

So until America, France, Australia start taking in more refugees - we should refuse the ones that seek asylum here?

A human life a is a human life, if I see a girl getting raped I'll try and stop it regardless of whether every1 pretends they haven't noticed.

As you said before don't worry about other countries, worry about your own - if its within our power to help - we should help :D

p.s. all immigrants are genuine you mean asylum seekers ;) :p I'm a cock

also - why is it that these people get MORE than british people who are on benefits? is that fair? fair enough give em the same (if they need it and deserve it) but giving em more is an insult!

that was a BAD BAD example their as wlel - you think i wud stand back and watch that happen to a little girl?!?!?!!?

that was a cheap and LOW insult joe!!!!!

if its within our power to help - we shud help, yeah, TO AN EXTENT.,,,,,,,,,without ppl takin the piss...like they DO....

As for more than us do you actually hav any idea? They are given food stamps - can you imagine how degrading that is? Why should our dole rats get money but asylum seekers get stamps?
