Tony Blair - Should he step down?

So last night Tony Blair tried to pass a bill that would have allowed police to hold anyone they suspect of 'terrorist' activities - WITHOUT trial for 90 days (Talk about a police state eh)...

... anyways, his own party outvoted him and people are calling him to step down and allow Gordon Brown (equally useless) to become the PM.

What with the war he forced on us, and an increasing number of laws and initiatives that he seems to feel the need to force on this country without either the support of his own party, OR the people who elected his party..... Maybe its time for him to do the decent thing and QUIT.

Whats your thoughts on this all?

Is there any stats on people that have been detained for the previous bill (the 28 days)?

How many get arrested / released / lead to stopping terrorist attacks?

i think it's another reason for people to THINK he needs to go - but really, if he was already stiil a popular PM - it wouldn't have mattered that much if this bill was defeated - people are now looking for more reasons why he should go.

the thing is, now everytime something bad happens, even the slightest thing, it's going to be "IS TIME UP FOR BLAIR" splattered over every newspaper - it'll get quickly boring.

    i want LABOUR gone!

The past few months have been quite surreal i think - He almost seems distant from britain and his own party. I get the feeling people are starting to realise that terrorism isnt something you can fight by turning the west into a scene from 1984.... and all the civil liberties we seem to be dropping by the minute are starting to make alot of people wonder if these are actually a good solution to the problem.

Definately not the man he was when he came into power.

I can see labour making it through another term tops before people start to question exactly what they voted in - especially with the economy on a knife edge, when that starts to slip the tories are going to look like the only party who are actually making an effort to listen to what people want - which is quite surreal given alot of peoples opinions of them in recent times.

30% of people will vote for/believe what The Sun tells them , that paper has more influence on the public than any prime minister speech could ever have

I'd say it was quite significant.

Not since the last tory government has there been a parlimentary defeat over a proposed bill - It says alot about the partys confidence in their own leader ... and the future.

With last weeks Blunket resignation - the whole labour government seems to be losing its credibility.

What a load of crock you really should do more reasearch before coming out with uneducated posts like that.

Fair enough he's not the greatest PM but when have we ever had a PM that everyone thinks is great, no matter what any of them ever do theres someone there to disagree.

With the Labour gov we now have the healthiest economy we've ever had, unemployment is at an all time low, hospital waiting lists have been dramtically reduced and more and more poeple are now able to own their own homes.

I dont like the bloke much but to say he's been crap and incompetent is well off the mark, if we still had the old tory govt in then fucks knows what mess the country would be in.

MPs voted against by 322 votes to 291, with 49 Labour MPs rebelling, but later backed a proposal to extend the detention time limit to 28 days.

Sorry to burst your bubble but

    1) Less people than ever can afford their homes - the percentage of first time buyers in the housing market is at its lowest level for DECADES. Considering the price of a house in newcastle has either doubled or quadrupled, while wages havent - then houses are LESS affordable.

What kind of a world is it when doctors and solicitors have to buy houses in places where people working in places like ASDA bought about 7 years ago....

    2) The economy is on a KNIFE EDGE. Personal debt is 1.1 trillion pounds, the high street shops are in serious trouble, personal bankrupcies have went up 50% in one year and the chancellor has a 30 billion hole in his finances that he wilL HAVE TO PAY ONE WAY OF THE OTHER WITH HIGHER TAXES OR CUTS IN PUBLIC SPENDING.

So lets say he cuts public spending. Well considering northern towns like newcastle have 60% of their money coming from the government (Yep 2/3 of the money in newcastle comes from the government) - then that means.... JOB LOSSES!

So lets say he raises taxes... people spend less and put businesses out of business .... JOB LOSSES!

And the only reason we have such low unemployment is because gordon brown is spending like theres no tomorrow ... WITH BORROWED MONEY, creating as many public sector jobs as possible.

Debt has to be repaid sometime - People are up to their eyeballs in it, the government is up to its neck in it. We are screwed.
