    Holidaying in the wave zones...

My sister is still going thru with her Phuket holiday in a fortnight.... "Shes staying on the other side of the Phuket..."

WTF?! Even the Soul Brothers in Kenya got swamped and they are on the other side of the world almost......

Theres a couple of other people iv spoke to as well seem not to be too bothered or put off by whats happened..

True, the wave danger is gone but the place is going to be a stinking sess pitt of death and disease. Not to mention I feel its a bit harsh flying out to country to lie in the sun while all the locals are in mourning....

    Thoughts?

i'm going in 4 weeks & was supposed to be going to 3 of the affected areas in thailand but we're contemplating not going now...just loosing what money we paid for tix etc & going else where! :)

it mite not be so bad in the none hit areas but the devestation to those areas that were hit looked horrid..don't really want to witness it 1st hand!

I feel really sorry for the local and esp the fishermen etc who got wiped out. These people live in these climes and where just trying to live.

The Tourists where there thru choice, people take for granted exotic climates and the unpredictablitity of it all. I know people who dont even take their Malieria tablets and stuff like that.

These countrys are like the third world for a reason you know... they tend to get flatterned every few thousands years!

This disaster will work as a good wake up call to the Long Haul glory hunters.

Your not in Benidorm now son.

Surely there's a shortage of food and water. And they're not really going to want 'holidaymakers' sightseeing the damage:confused:

I think it will be business as usual in Thailand in about three weeks max. Phuket was hit by a strong sea surge and not a huge wave like S.Lanka. The only damage is to weak wooden buildings. Dont under estimate how hard a Asian can graft when hes missing out on Western Holiday money!

I understand what you're saying Pike but on the other hand, there are a lot of people relying on the tourist industry for their income in the unaffected parts.

As for the reconstruction of the beach resorts, you know when you were at Palolem pike? Me and Jules went back during monsoon and pretty much the whole beachfront had been taken apart, the beach bungalows and restaurants and bars etc. They rebuild everything brand new every season so I imagine they will be able to knock something up pretty quickly.

My friend from work has just finished travelling through there. She left in October & travelled for a few months and has just settled into a new home in New Zealand - pleased she's out of the danger area.

Glad to see Pike has a heart after all, though on reflection it was probably his missus typing ;)

I've had a some great times in Thailand, my parents are considering moving out there on retirement and I just hope everything gets sorted as soon as poss. The Thai people are some of the nicest people going, being there makes such a change from Spain/France/Most of the continent where they all (seem) to hate the British.
