    Gurkha Citizenship Campaign

Peter Carroll and the Shepway Liberal Democrats are backing the campaign to offer UK citizenship to Gurkhas who have been prepared to fight and work for Britain. The current rules deny Gurkhas that right even after a minimum of 15 years service in some of the most respected regiments in the British Army.

Over 400 Gurkhas went to Liverpool on 1 September to lobby the Home Office for fair treatment. Peter Carroll and other Liberal Democrats accompanied and supported them.

    About the Gurkhas

"Nepal is a landlocked country in the Himalayas. Its only natural resource is its scenery, its significant export is its fighting men. The men we call the Gurkhas."

"For over 180 years the Gurkhas have helped to fight Britain's wars and keep the peace. They have won 13 Victoria Crosses and served in most of the major conflicts of the 20th Century."

"If there was a minute's silence for every Gurkha casualty from World War 2 alone, we would have to keep quiet for two weeks."

    Source: Gurkha Welfare Trust

The Victoria Cross is the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.

26 actually, showing how good a job they have done.

Quite shocking that they are not granted citizenship considering that they give themselves to this country, which is a hell of a lot more than many people who are granted it

Citizenship for Gurkhas on one thread, Asyllum Seeker hatred on another .... just interesting how the perceptions towards non british residents can swing so wildly in only a few lines on the board.

they can fight for the country - and get nowt. yet, there are other ways to get in by doing very little - a mere bride to a dodgy khazakstan with a lorry.

The gurkhas are heroes... my dad used to tell me about them when I was younger... they really are the stuff of legend and are highly respected.

    They deserve british citizenship.
