    Arnesen suspended in Chelsea link

    Frank Arnesen
    Spurs shock at Arnesen approach
Spurs have suspended sporting director Frank Arnesen after they claimed Chelsea made an approach to the Dane without their permission.

Arnesen says he wants to move to Chelsea, and Spurs have confirmed they are taking legal advice on the matter.

Chelsea, however, insist they made an "official approach" to Spurs for Arnesen to move to Stamford Bridge.

But Spurs told club website www.spurs.co.uk that Chelsea's move was made "in direct breach of FAPL rules".

A Spurs statement read: "This approach was made both prior to requesting permission and without permission from the club."

Chelsea reacted swiftly to reject the allegations, insisting: "Chelsea Ltd made an official approach to Tottenham Hotspur for permission to speak to Frank Arnesen two weeks ago.

"Chelsea Ltd has been in direct discussions with Tottenham for the last two weeks on this subject."

The row over Arnesen comes only days after Chelsea were fined £300,000 and handed a suspended three-point deduction by Premier League officials for their role in an illegal meeting with Arsenal full-back Ashley Cole.

This is a bolt from nowhere because his partnership with Martin Jol was the team to take us forward.
Tottenham Supporters' Trust spokesman Daniel Wynn

The 48-year-old arrived at Spurs at the start of last season and was instrumental in appointing Jacques Santini, then his successor Martin Jol.

He is also responsible for masterminding the club's transfer policy.

The Spurs statement added: "Notwithstanding that he is subject to contract and holds wide-ranging responsibilities and commitments to all parties at Tottenham Hotspur Football Club, Frank has indicated that he wishes to move to Chelsea Football Club.

"Accordingly, the board of Tottenham Hotspur plc has suspended Frank Arnesen with immediate effect.

"The club is currently in discussions with its legal advisors and a further announcement will be made in due course."

The Premier League, however, is yet to receive a complaint from Spurs officials about the alleged approach to Arnesen.

"We have not received an official complaint," said Premier League spokesman Dan Johnson. "We await to see the action Tottenham wish to pursue."

Arnesen is widely accepted to be one of the best-connected men in world football, and that is what is likely to have made him a prime Chelsea target.

He has also made a reputation for unearthing young talent around the world - qualties that will have attracted Chelsea.

Manager Jose Mourinho revealed recently that the club would be focussing on producing home-grown talent, despite the massive spending power of owner Roman Abramovich.

He said: "We will invest a lot in the scouting department.

"We want to have the best possible network of scouts around the world and to produce our own players because when we are at this level we can only buy the best players in the world.

"Where are the best players? At the best clubs in the world - and they don't want to sell. So you want to improve your team and it is difficult.

"Even with money you cannot buy them so you have to produce."

Crazy isn't it! I think it's more the case that Chelsea have asked to speak to him 2 weeks ago, but Spurs don't want to to let him go, so Chelsea got sick of waiting, and just spoke to him anyways. If he wants to go, he'll go anyways, it doesn't really matter in the end

in any other job, speaking to a prospective employer is allowed... why should football be any different. if someone wants to move they will.

no point in fining them in the pocket , hit them with a 8 point reduction and they wont be so quick to do stuff like this

That is all fine and well but there are rules in place that say this kind of thing cannot be done

But they've asked Spurs to speak to him already. He wants to go. There's nothing stopping him from going, there's no point in keeping him if he doesn't want to stay is there? I think your getting worked up over nothing tbh

    ????

We've said no to speak to him but theyve gone and done it anyway , it is against the rules. Yes he may have wanted to go but what has happened to playing by the rules? They just think they are a fucking law above themselves.

And Arnesen was the best thing to happen to our club for a long time , I have every right to get worked up that he has left in this manner.

If the Big Guns come calling, then people go! It happens with Directors, players, maneger, everybody. He's probably been tapped up before Chelsea even went to Spurs asking for permission.

I can totally see why you would be upset by him going, I think he might of even made you's into a Top 4 team, I just meant your getting worked up too much about the way he's going. He was going to go no matter what way it happened, plus it goes on all the time

but those rules are morally wrong. football shouldn't be classed apart from other occupations.

it'll be good to see if it goes to the european high court...

people know the rules when they choose to work within football. therefore they should abide by them.

i'm sure your opinion would differ if it was happening to your club.

arnesen is under contract and is party to highly confidential information at spurs - as such we were right to suspend him. i hope the fa throw the book at chelsea.

players and staff always get attracted to a bigger club. its happened to boro countless times, we might not like it but only an idiot would deny them the chance to better themselves through some misguided sense of loyalty.

if i want to talk to another company or if someone headhunts me its perfectly legal. the only reason football is any different is because players have been surpressed for decades... its precisely the kind of thing jimmy hill and jean marc bosman fought to change.

the rules stink and are stacked in favour of greedy chairmen and dodgy agents. maybe if players were allowed more freedom (which is surely their human right) then it would cut out the need for shady middlemen like pini zahavi and create a more transparent game.

I don't see the difference in this to Spurs trying to tap up O'Neill a couple of seasons back.

Frank Arnesen would have taken Spurs to the champions league next season. He is the best in the world at his job and was on the brink of bringing D Alesandro and Riquelme in.

fair point but its slightly different because Chelsea are in the same league and therefore its a direct rival. They aren't only taking a member of staff (like tapping up a player), they are taking months of work, future targets and confidential details with them. Arnesen knows full details of all our players' contracts - i.e. King/Defoe/Robbo

One thing i will question is why he wants to go? He won't have the same responsibilities at Chelsea that he has at Spurs. He would come up against Jose in a power battle and there'd only be one winner there...Therefore he's only gonna end up being a chief scout. Money talks, clearly ambition and drive aren't words in Arnesen's vocabulary....

I think the best thing to do now is put Jol in full charge. At least he knows about loyalty having spurned Ajax's advances earlier this season

So it's more about rivalry than breach of rules.

you mis-interpret my point. If he had gone to West Brom they are a direct rival - as in they are in the same league.
I would've been miffed if he'd headed off to a Spanish/Italian team but would not be as worried since they are likely to have different transfer targets to ourselves. Plus the contract info wouldn't be as dangerous as it is now its in Chelsea's hands.

in football you are a payed sportsman and the rules are slightly different

it is illegal for your employer to make you work 5 hours without having a 15 minute break

but this happens all the time in football

it is completley different from your "normal" type of job
