You can bet your bottom dollar on it, they are making an example of them.

It's rediculous, they care more about a fairly minor worm than they do about granny rapists and murderers.

3 months for that is a joke IMO.

Not their fault the software was insecure.

At least he will get a good job after its all over...

And did they actually hack anybody?? It was just a worm wasnt it? They did not cause any major damage, did not steal any money etc.

Little shits run the streets causing far more trouble and they are just allowed to continue.

    Pathetic.

Thats total bollocks mate, the worm did not cause any damage, simply "inconvenience" Nothing like Blaster, Bagle or Netsky, or Sasser for that matter.

    The JUDGE said:

"Judge Beatrice Bolton told the pair: "You demonstrated that two young lads could infect a large number of computers with a worm that was potentially very dangerous."

She wont know fuck all about what shes talking about. Nobody lost anything.

Typical fucking yank arseholes sticking their noses in where they arn't wanted.

Having your machine run a bit slow is hardly worth going to jail for though!

It's the responsibility of a computer owner to take reasonable responsibility for the security of their machine. If they just leave it sitting connected to the net, unpatched, no AV or antispyware, then they damn well deserve their PC to get raped IMO.

Fair enough, exreme stuff yes i don't disagree but this was minor!

Spyware boils my piss, it's much worse than a worm IMO, again, take responsibility for your PC, and you won't get either!!

Im sure you will do some things that are "annoying" to other people, but I would hardly say you should be jailed

    Yes!

There is no excuse in my opinion, ESPECIALLY not ignorance. Its not hard to turn on automatic updates and install a free antivirus, antispyware program and a personal firewall.

Would you walk through the streets of <roughtest place you can think of> drawing blatent attention to yourself attracting people who will rob you? You are doing basically the same having an unpatched system (in electronic terms before anybody tries to be a smart arse!)

All i'm saying is, a little bit of common sense goes a long way. If people did this, then the problem would be drastically reduced.

The human element of computing is by far the weakest and easiest to exploit.

If people had patched, or if the software writers hadnt left it so open, then there wouldnt be people who "need to get a girlfriend" that come along and exploit these vulnerabilities with subsequent inconvenience ranging from the trivial to the extreme that runs into the hundreds of millions of pounds/dollars.

The Judge is right in what she is saying tho, they demonstrated that they could inflict damage, not that they actually did cause damage, weather it causes bother or not still shouldnt be fukin on with worms in the first place, they piss me right off!

6 months will teach em a lesson like.

Ok well not necessarily deservant, that's a bit harsh, not all that many people really know what they are doing with computers in the home market, but people need to take a view from both sides.

If you leave your car keys in your car, and someone steals it, then you can hardly say that you had taken appropriate measures to prevent it. This is what I mean.

Also to be fair, the manufactueres should be taking more responsibility for this aswell to stop it happening.

Since when did people go to jail because they COULD HAVE caused major damage though? You should be punished on what you have done, not what you could do.

    Can't argue with that!

Usually I would agree, just this seems to me like they are just making an example of them.

what was the charge? they have been punished for sending the worm out surely. no matter what harm is caused its surely a crime in the eyes of the law.

In these kind of charges its not what damage has been caused as far as i know its the intent.

    Perhaps.

    I know...

I *could* take my car out and repeatedly drive over someones legs.

Yet, I am not in jail?

They shouldn't have done it. Virus's/worms e.t.c do my head in no end, especially when I get them.

A jail term was maybe a little bit harsh though. I don't agree with the law making "examples" of people more than anything.
