30 million stolen in Belfast bank raid

Raiders have stolen an estimated 30 million pounds from a bank in Northern Ireland, a source has said, in one of Britain's biggest ever robberies.

The Monday afternoon heist came after families of two members of staff were held hostage, the source added.

Speculation was rife that the raid could have been the work of Northern Ireland's paramilitary gangs which remain heavily involved in crime despite observing ceasefires in the province's long-running sectarian conflict.

Christmas just got better for some people.

the fact that ni pound notes have a miniscule circulation in an area of europe where currency principally consists of euros and english sterling...

can you imagine trying to shift 30 million northern irish notes when the entire country is on alert for someone trying to do exactly that?

The smart man will put his share in a very safe place and forget about it for a few years.

I doubt very much it is all £1 notes seeing as it was a sorting and distrubuting bank.

It will be interesting to see if they get caught. they normally do these days thanks to DNA etc........

The funny thing is...... if the gang DIDN'T (I think they did by the sounds) use violence or threats of violence, then they could get very light sentences. The amount stolen doesn't make a difference in the eyes of the law.

If one of the robbers had a banana in his coat pocket and pretends its a gun then the sentence jumps straight up to 7 years ++++
