Newcastle is a fickle crowd and i imagine these days its pretty much impossible to pack out a prog/trance/techno club unless you book A list DJ's - I'd imagine only a fraction of the regular clientele actually know or give a fuck about who they are going to see.

I'd blow my nut if Ben lost or Lange were booked to play promise, but your average clubber isnt gonna give a stuff unless they see flyers with 'Ferry Corsten' or 'Judge Jules' headlining them. At best i'd say you might only have a chance if you put one interesting new talent alongside a regular crowd puller as an attempt to broaden the tastes of the crowd

Once again, not being a promotor or a dj thats just a casual guess.

    sad but true

newcastle, for whatever reason, doesn't be able to support a large regular trance/techno/HH/whatever night anymore.... i think the general liking for that style of music is no longer a 'main stream' thing for punters. Nowsdays, with newcastle being where it is - people don't seem to want to travel as much - and newcastle locals seem to prefer your local cheesy disco - it's what the toon is known for - stag dos and short skirts.

and the age old arguement "well, back in the day when Promise played prog it was much better" is also a bullshit arguement - G&D with Tom Neville in Aug? dead. it's the punters tastes and the scene in general thats changed...

edit : i can't see techno or breaks or owt like that becoming the next main stream popular genre of dance... UK Garage tried - and failed. thank our lucky stars

Depends on the size of the club. You are not going to get 1400 people through your door unless you book big names. Promise is doing really well ATM I don't think anyone has any reason to complain. Ferry on boxing day, Matt playing a 5hr set to a busy club not long ago.

If you're doing something right....keep doing it!

Exactly. When Promise tried to change the line ups slightly towards the end of this year hardly anyone turned up. Sadly, you can't have it both ways.

No no, they weren't, they were shouting Yoji, my point being if they were bothered at all about who was on they wouldn't have thought people were shouting Gary, they would have known it was Yoji!!

totally agree about their warmups, but i think that promise outgrew it humble roots and the scene changed.....

those prog lovers are now 'dig regulars....

i agree - but the wholey having to go monthly thing kinda took away from the weekly intimate nights and made it so that it had to be a big monthly EVENT ....

There's a fair bit of talk in this thread that Newcastle struggles to support a trance night and criticism of the bookings. Well be grateful you've got a regular trance night! Its rare that there is one in Leeds and when Mission 'dares' to put on trance, its a shit venue anyway. I'd much rather travel to Promise anyday!

Music wise Promise just aint my gig at all & for long time now I have just went for the crack, banter & people.

It needs a new battalion of fresh people who don't have any preconceived ideas of how it should be.
