Tinnitus Trips Up Another Top DJ

Big beat/ house DJ Jon Carter has cancelled his next three months of DJ dates after reportedly developing tinnitus (News Of The World).

The husband of celebrity radio DJ Sara Cox joins numerous other big name jocks to have developed the debilitating condition characterised by ringing in the ears, including Daft Punk's Thomas Bangalter and Mauro Picotto, who himself took several months off last year.

"Mauro gets severe earache basically and the doctors are really worried, as I am, about long term problems for his hearing," Mauro's manager Jake McNeill told Skrufff last year.

"It's been an ongoing issue for quite some time, basically it's been brought on my too much flying and too much listening to loud music, just general pressure on his ears, his doctor's are concerned about him developing tinnitus," he continued.

"He wears those special earplugs but he's only started wearing them recently. Hearing is one of your senses and they'll come a time when every DJ is going to want to hang up their headphones and get on with a normal life," Jake predicted.

Daft Punk's Thomas Bangalter quit DJing altogether because of tinnitus problems two years ago, explaining "I've given up because I want to protect my ears, music is too loud in clubs' (Mixmag), though according to Slam's Orde Meikle has now recovered sufficiently to return to making music.

"I think he's better now and they're working on the third album, but he had a bit of a scare and thought he'd damaged his ear and had to take obviously reasonably drastic steps to see how bad the damage was," Orde told Skrufff last month.

"I don't think it was as bad as he at first thought. So as far as I know they're back in the studio," he said.

It doesnt have to be incredibly loud for it to be good - Ive been to nights at promise and had my ears ringing for days afterwards - didnt make it any better a night.

I went out on friday and left the club and my hearing was totally fine - no ringing or owt, the volume was perfect.

    Overly loud soundsystems

Exactly. A load sound system doesn't necessarily mean a good sound system. Liquid, for example, seems to be far too bassey (sp?) for my liking. On the other hand, the Mono system isn't quite bassey enough (hence why we've just bought two brand new subs and a new amp! :) ).

I think the liquid sound system is one of the best in town!

However, its VERY loud, and as such, I never go in without earplugs.

Theres no excuse to moan about it being too loud, if (like me) you are concerned about your hearing or just generally don't like it so loud, take earplugs.

At £15 (inc delievery) for 200 pairs, it's hardly going to break the bank.

The sound guy at Privelige was also telling Mauro to turn it down I believe

I would have said a good sound system is one that doesnt need to be so incredibly loud and have bass that hurts your ears and shakes your guts to sound good.

The liquid sound system is a lazy one in my eyes. Packing as many subs as possible on high volume aint that hard is it.

And if your not playing the kind of music that suits that kind of sound system, its gonna be gash.
