    NE Regional Assembly

    Yeah or Neah?

Since the referendum is at the end of the month what are peoples feelings on this. Will it be beneficial to the area or make no change whatsoever

I say yes at the moment... but I have yet to hear a negative argument on it. Decisions being made in the northeast (newcastle? ;)) is probably more benificial.

i think it's pointless - from what i've heard, they're not going to have any real powers - goverment have the final say and dictate the procedures. it's just another level of management and red tape to have our local problems bound around to.

    more quango's (sp)

Exactly my thoughts on it. It will just be another layer of politicians who have o power, which will mean that it takes longer to implement anything, and probably cost the taxpayer more

just another level of middle managers basically... more money, more delays, more people thinking they can do something beneficial when they're just deluded. more red tape to hold up things... managers managing managers

why do we need this regional assembly? what the fook are MPs for then if not to put across the regions views?

i also know fook all about politics - but i'm a voter - this is how i see it, Surley they should be trying to convince people like me?

It will lead to more than just the councils being amalgamised. They have already said that if it happens the Fire service will be one big service covering the whole of the region. Which will result in a decrease in good service and safety imo

There was supossed to be a Yorkshire and NW refferendum but the postal voting scheme has been deemed crap so they have been scrapped but its still going ahead here cos its so pro labour in this area they think it will go through no matter how they do it - we are being used as guinnea pigs in reallity

More managers, more red tape and higher taxes to fund it all. No thanks. Our regional MPs should be putting the region forward at a national level anyway. If they aren't, then don't elect them again. A regional assembly would just give our MPs even more of an excuse not to bother with their constituencies.

Trivial things really like a regionwide bus passes for OAP's & few other things like this.

I also dont have any faith in current system, so lets have a look at this see what this is like & it will phaze a lot of the old councils out.

Alot of the decisions, especially the major ones, will have to go through "London" anyway
