nail on head, who is to say that at a patients low point they may FEEL like they would rather be dead?

Yep, I fully agree, as long as a court of law can unequivicly decide that the patient is in the right mental state. Not  relatives.

if someone is diagnosed with an incureable illness...i think thay should be able to give written consent to have help to die when they're not capable anymore!!!! :)

Feels like things are being repeated an awful lot hear ... What everyone is saying is that yes it should be legal as long as there are rules and monitors and legal mombo jombo in place so the poor buggers can die with a bit of dignity.

If a dog is really ill what happens ?? we put it down the same with other sick animals how do we know they want to go to the big pet stotre in the sky??? is it a case that if regulations are put in place for humans that animals should have the same writes or am i just opening up a can of worms here??? mmm:rolleyes:

Yeah, but what if the person in question isn't capable of writing due to thier dibilitating ilness? Don't mean to nit pick, just that every thing surrounding the subject obviously has to come under the closest scrutiny.

All i know is if i was terminally ill and i didnt want to live in a hospital bed for the last part of my life... id want to be able to have the authority to kill myself.

i dont think its fair if someone doesnt want to bare with the pain till they die !! not a v happy life at all !!

We had a patient a few weeks ago that with severe spastic quadraplegic cerebral palsy, her body was the most distorted i've ever seen. During our shift handover we were told that her next of kin had always been an organisation. One of the nurses said "if i ever give birth to a child like that i would ask the medical staff to give her water and make her comfortable but to let her die because she has no quality of life"

I was pretty shocked! mainly that she would come out and say that infront of a room full of people! It sparked off a massive heated debate which went from that to euthanasia. I still don't know where i stand on it though  every case is different

I don't think there is a line that can be drawn on this like paul says....nobody could draw up a list of guidelines for euthanasia....if it was ever to become legal/accepted i think each case would have to addressed individually.

I would personally like the decision to die rather than suffer.

Another point, people have the right to ask medical staff not to be rescucitated. Out of about 45 beds I have a red cross through about 15 names meaning they are not for rescus. Not all of them are terminally ill and a few of them are far from it! In most cases the person would have a very good chance of a full recovery and many years left following cardiac arrest during surgery etc, it could be argued still that the doctors job is to save the life?

Yup and in some places they have a limited ammount of machinary, doctory, nurses etc, what whould happen if there is someone tying up the equiptment etc and that person was going to die anyways, and someone else came into hospital who needed that machinary and had a good chance of surviving BUT needed that equiptment to survive which the other person was using. What should happen?
