but surely the pikeys who handle massive credit cards could do exactly the same?

reality is these aren't street urchins they've nabbed off the street they're respectable employees... Surely you know loads of british people who are forever handling sums of money they couldn't make in a year...

    yet we trust them.

why shouldn't we trust trained pakistani workers?

    Its about numbers

If someone in Peterlee swipes my card for £100 it = approx 1% of there annual income
If someone in Banglore swipes my card for £100 it = approx 92% of there annual income

spence but some of us can take a lot more than £100 out on our cards, yet we still trust pikeys in peterlee.

    That was my point.

Now harvesting the numbers and selling them onto big card frauders I could comprehend, there is a big market - but this is just as likely to happen in peterlee and I'm sure precautions are taken to prevent this... Banks are the best companies at hording money they're not going to give it away to petty thieves.

I honestly think this arguement is stupid, there isn't a hope in hell the call centers in pakistan are more likely to steal than the call center workers in peterlee.

I will end it with this:

does anyone else on this board work in a call centre or is it only me???

i dont see all call centre staff as being 'thick'. u cant just come off the streets and get a job in my work....u do have to have experience.

and as for shite wages....yeah,nearly £16,000 a year and 3 bonuses, thats pathetic eh?

ill admit it there are some pathetic call cantres out there, but there is some that are pretty damn decent, and u dont always feel like a 'battery hen'

    rant over :p

Which one you at? I smell £ :D

My office acts as a call centre during the day, which is why every six weeks on a weekend like this I actually have to talk to people

You're right about there being shit call centres as well as good 'uns. When I was temping earlier in the year just after moving back up here, I did notice that most of Newcastle's call centres were pretty crappy. Too many jobsworthy supervisors, crap pay and utter shit conditions (permission slips to go to the toilet!). The one's I temped at in Birmingham (shit city - don't move there) were of a much higher standard, with good pay, friendly bosses and a relaxed attitude - treated like adults.

Doesn't matter much now anyway. I wonder if the staff in India need toilet permission slips?

Where thats a good job when ur in your teens/early 20's do you really want to be earning that much when you hit 35?

This wasn't a dig at people working in call centers, more at the industry itself - it isn't a highly skilled or highly productive job - you are in effect a drone, I don't think call centers contribute greatly to progression of british industry... I'd much rather see british people spend longer in education, in financially rewarding jobs, or even more challenging jobs... Losing call centers aint a bad thing imo

 @ nick leeson comment :D

the person who has a call centre job will be a pretty high caste indian....unfortunately not some slum dweller who did good and got a nice cushy call centre job...thats what the caste system does! I would trust them more with my details than my credit card company at the mo lol

India is full of extremes...like joe says they arent all street urchins that have been salvaged from a life of begging to be tempted by your money. To work in a call centre they are probably at most 3 'castes' down from a Brahmin.....not the untouchables who earn £100 a year!!

this must all sound like i'm pro indian call centres.....but im not! i just had to convince my new indian crdit card company that i didnt withrdraw a £2 coin from a cash machine lol....i just learnt alot about india when i was living there so cant help but try and make people understand what life is like there

I read about it on another thread. Steve Morrell found the same:

Steve Morrell, of ContactBabel, said: "People are having to call back more and that damages the brand.

"There are also often communication problems, in particular when regional accents are involved which means calls take longer and both sides struggle to make themselves understood."

He believes the cost savings from moving jobs abroad can be outweighed by the loss of frustrated customers.

"In manufacturing, you get the pretty much the same shirt wherever it is made. But when it comes to customer service, you're talking about quality," said Mr Morrell

I read an article on call centres in India and apparently the workers are heavily trained prior to taking a job. They have to learn regional accents (so that scouser may be from delhi!). They also have to learn british facts (ie history) aswell as current events (especially sport), as some people often ask things like 'oooh did you see tim at wimbledon' and 'bloody man united again, did you see it last night?'.

Ths probably isn't implemented everywhere but some companies are certainly trying to fool us into thinking they are based in britain!

I have read & watched programmes about this so called 'BRIT'ING UP STYLE TRAINING', but as yet have not herd it in action.

    Regarding Training:

A spokeswoman for Lloyds TSB said:
"We employ highly trained graduate staff who are given the same comprehensive training as that given to UK employees.
